History

Freshwater is one of the UK’s leading independent communications consultancies. We were founded in Newport, South Wales in 1997 by former BBC journalist Steve Howell with PR as our main focus.

In 2001, our reputation for hard-hitting PR was cemented when we conducted the campaign for Wales’s successful bid to host the 2010 Ryder Cup.

Shortly after that, we re-branded as Freshwater as part of a growth strategy aimed at broadening our offer and building a UK-wide reach.

With funding from Finance Wales, private investors and through a Placing when we listed on AIM (the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange) in 2007, we acquired a number of like-minded agencies to add new locations and specialist expertise.

Among those who joined the enlarged group were Clear Communications (London, healthcare, 2006), Black and White Communications (Hampshire, technology, 2006), Attenborough Saffron (London, consumer, 2007), Waterfront (London, public affairs, 2007) and Merlin (Cardiff, marketing, 2008).

We also acquired Reekie PR (2004) and Profile Plus (2010) to form Freshwater Scotland and Life Communications (2009) to establish a presence in Belfast.

The group left AIM in 2010 to focus on organic growth after market sentiment turned against small companies in the wake of the banking crisis.

We employ 55+ staff in Cardiff and London. Group board members are: David Howell (Chairman), John Underwood (Acting Chief Executive), Haydn Evans (Finance Director), Angharad Neagle (Group Managing Director), Marie Louise Windeler (Non-Executive Director) and Steve Howell (Non-Executive Director). Ken Tilley is Company Secretary.
