Sarah Bartlett, aka SB, started at Freshwater in December 2013 as a PR Assistant. Now, in May 2017, she is an Account Manager at the London office. Here she talks about her experience of working – and growing – at Freshwater.
After completing my Masters in 2013, I spent some time thinking about what I wanted from my career. I decided that being challenged creatively, working in a fast-paced and varied environment, and being part of a strong team were what mattered most. It was that decision that drove me to apply for a PR Assistant role at Freshwater.
My Freshwater story started with me working predominantly in consumer PR – helping fashion, retail and food brands to raise their profiles in the consumer press and drive sales. I loved it, but quickly learned that at Freshwater - we’re never standing still! Soon I was offered the opportunity to diversify my sector expertise and get involved in a number of our professional services, not-for-profit and healthcare accounts.
Fast forward three and a half years and that exposure to new sectors and support from senior colleagues has allowed me to grow exponentially. Working with digital experts, talented graphic designers and public affairs gurus definitely helps! I’m now an Account Manager responsible for delivering not just high impact public relations campaigns, but also for effectively integrating public affairs, digital strategy and marketing communications into the mix for my clients.
The variety of skills I’ve gained and number of clients I’ve worked with at Freshwater is, I think, pretty rare for an Account Manager. There’s no shortage of opportunity to experience different aspects of the industry, and the senior management team actively encourages us to try new things and add strings to our bows. Since being here, I’ve drafted social media engagement plans, directed photo calls and videos, helped to co-ordinate a large scale stunt, attended fashion trend briefings, worked with celebrities for a charity campaign, implemented a stakeholder engagement plan to open a factory in Scotland, got involved in a political party conference and provided policy briefings to MPs – to name but a few!
My first few years at Freshwater have been packed full of opportunity and reasons to be proud of the work I do each day. As we grow our teams in both Cardiff and London, I can’t wait to meet the next generation of talented people who want to add their own chapters to the Freshwater story.
