Freshwater was asked by HSR\\UK, a coalition of eleven city councils, to drive a campaign promoting the benefit of high-speed rail to UK plc.
Crucial to the campaign’s success was maintaining cross-party support and engaging with MPs, peers and the media across Britain’s largest conurbations. Freshwater launched the campaign at an event attended by all the frontbench spokespeople. Collaborations between Freshwater and the eleven city press offices ensured a constant stream of stories for local and regional media, providing access to high value information. In addition, Freshwater delivered a series of short videos featuring each of the city leaders.
Throughout the six-month campaign, awareness of – and support for – its messages among senior policy advisers, peers and MPs was maintained. The campaign website was inundated with hundreds of endorsements for the initiative and all three main parties entered the general and council elections supporting the principle of high-speed rail in their manifestos.
Freshwater is still active in the high speed rail debate through the Independent Transport Commission and the All-Party Parliamentary Rail Group.
