Freshwater was tasked with the aim of constructing a broad based coalition in order to raise awareness and opposition to a proposed Severn Barrage and highlight the damage that would be caused to the regional economy, the environment and biodiversity of the estuary and the maritime community in the area.
We created and branded a “Stop the Barrage NOW” campaign consisting of a website, stakeholder engagement and media relations. A fully integrated approach enabled us to quickly establish the campaign as the leading voice of opposition against a Severn Barrage proposal.
In October 2010, the campaign came to a successful conclusion with the announcement from the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Chris Huhne MP, that the “Government has concluded that it does not see the strategic case to bring forward a tidal energy scheme in the Severn estuary”.
In 2012, Freshwater was asked again to run the campaign against the Severn barrage, but this time with a greater emphasis on promoting alternative renewable energy solutions. The team worked with stakeholders to prepare the ground and set up the Sustainable Severn initiative.
